Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, he was president when the civil happened. He eventualy was a lawyer and a republican polition, he was known as "Honest Abe." He won the presidental election of 1860. He was elected because he debated slavery with Douglass called the Lincoln Douglas debates. Lincoln was mainly against three things, slavery, states having more power than the nation, and war. Lincoln's goal was to keep the union together, but he viwed scedeing illegal, and the civil war broke out 6 weeks after he took office. On Jan. 1st 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, that freed all slaves in the United States. In 1864 Lincoln was relected as president. April 9, 1865, Genral Robert E. Lee (Confederate) surrederded to Genral Ulysses S. Grant (Union) ending the Civil War. Lincoln was shot in the head April 14, 1865, and he died the next morning. Lincoln is most known for giving the Gettysberg Address, passing the Emancipation Proclamation, being assasinated, and his second inaugural speach.
