The Election Of Lincoln
Summary
The election of 1860 was an impotant one, it decided who was to be president during the hard times. Abraham Lincon was the representive for the republicans. Stephen Douglass, was the represenitive for the northern democrats, while, John C. Brekinrige was representing the southern democrats. Democrats knew they wouldn't win with their votes being divided inbetween two canadates, so they created the Constutinal Union Party and nominated John C. Bell.
When the votes were in, Lincoln had won all the northern states, Brekinrige won the south, and Bell won the border states. While Douglass clamed Missouri and part of New Jersey. With this, the north did what the south always feared. Their population was bigger, therefore they had more electorial power. The free states had complete control of the government.
This did not sit well in the south and they slowly sceded from the nation.

South Seceding
Many people belive that Lincoln's election was what caused the south to leave the union and that as a result Lincoln is to blame for the American Civil War. Southerners left because they felt that the government didn't fairly represnt them. This is because he didn't campaine in any of the southern sates, and therefore didn't win any. The south belived that if someone shouldnn't be able to become president without votes from the south, because of this and other reasons the south desided to scede from the union.

State Right or Federal Right?
Summary
Bill Of Rights
A big issue right before the Civil War was how much power the federal goverment really should have over its people. The people in the north belived in a strong federal government. The southern states belived that each state government should have more power, and should be able to make important desions on its own. Southerners claimed that the federal government wasn't allowed to to stop them for having slavery because of the 10th Amendment. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Southerners also made all their money by agriculture, meaning they are basically farmers. To be a farmer you need to tend to the land and right now the slaves tended to the land. If slavery was banned then the south's economy would drop because no one would work in the feilds.
Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis was a war hero in the west and was chosen to be the presdent of the Conferate States. The confederate states wanted to secede from the union so that way they could form their power government. At first he didnt want to be presidet, he wanted to be a genral in the army. He ended up taking the job, bcause of his moderate stance on leaving the union and, when
states tried to determinr laws for their new counrty argued against it, and he elected good leaders for the army. But he ran the army in a poor way, he argued woth his genrals. In 1866 he was tried for treason. He was released in 1868.Davis’ popularity and effectiveness were not higher than the numbers of Confederate lostes in the last years of the War. On April 2, 1865, he and the
other members of the Confederate government were forced to flee from Richmond VA before the oncomingUnion Army. He was captured by Northern soldiers near Irwinville, Georgia on May 10, 1865. He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virginia for two years. He was never tried for treason, but was released on a bond in May 1867.
