Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant is conciderd to be a great Civil War genral because he won many important battles. He won over Forts Henrry and Fort Donelson (both in Mississippi Valley.) He also won Vicksburg Mississippi and gained control of Chatattanooga Tenessee. Grant also direted another union genral, Sherman, south while he and his men, known as the Potamac, marched into Richmond Virgina the Confederate Captial. Lincoln appointed Grant General-in-Chief of the Union Army in March 1864. April 9, 1865 was a good day for him, Genral Robert E. Lee surrendred at Appomattox Court House. After the Civil War, he served as the Secretary of War from August 12, 1867 to January 14, 1868under President Andrew Johnson.
