Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant is conciderd to be a great Civil War genral, because he won many important battles. He won over Forts Henrry and Fort Donelson (both in Mississippi Valley.) He also won Vicksburg Mississippi and gained control of Chatattanooga Tenessee. Grant also direted another union genral, Sherman south while he and his men, known as the Potamac, marched into Richmon Virgina the Confederate Captial. Lincoln appointed Grant General-in-Chief of the Union Armyin March 1864. April 9, 1865 was a good day for him, Genral Robert E. Lee surrendred at Appomattox Court House. After the Civil War, he served as the Secretary of War from August 12, 1867 to January 14, 1868under President Andrew Johnson.
Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee was a good man, and loyal. He fought with his home state Virgina even tho he hated the idea a secession. In fact he was so layal to the state of Virgina he declined President Abarham Lincoln's offer to become a union genral. Lee was a well respected man and a great motivator, as a result he was admired by all his men. He won the Seven Days Battle, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battles of Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Lee was the the genral who lost the battle that was the turning point in the war for the union, the Battle of Gettysburg. He surrenderd April 9th 1865, at Appomattox Cout House in the Confederate Capital of Richmond, VA.
Aberham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, he was president when the civil happened. He eventualy was a lawyer and a republican polition, he was known as "Honest Abe." He won the presidental election of 1860. He was elected because he debated slavery with Douglass called the Lincoln Douglas debates. Lincoln was mainly against three things, slavery, states having more power than the nation, and war. Lincoln's goal was to keep the union together, but he viwed scedeing illegal, and the civil war broke out 6 weeks after he took office. On Jan. 1st 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, that freed all slaves in the United States. In 1864 Lincoln was relected as president. April 9, 1865, Genral Robert E. Lee (Confederate) surrederded to Genral Ulysses S. Grant (Union) ending the Civil War. Lincoln was shot in the head April 14, 1865, and he died the next morning. Lincoln is most known for giving the Gettysberg Address, passing the Emancipation Proclamation, being assasinated, and his second inaugural speach.
Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Davis was a war hero in the west, and was chosen to be the presdent of the Conferate States. At first he didn't want to be president, he wanted to be a genral in the army. He ended up taking the job, bcause of his moderate stance on leaving the union, when states tried to determine laws for their new counrty he argued against it, and he elected good leaders for the army. He ran the army in a poor way, he argued with his genrals.
In 1866, he was tried for treason. He was released in 1868. On April 2, 1865, he and the other members of the Confederate Government were forced to flee from Richmond VA before the oncoming Union Army. He was captured by Northern soldiers near Irwinville, Georgia on May 10, 1865. He was imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virginia for two years. He was never tried for treason, but was released on a bond in May 1867.
